Rays Walk Off in the 12th to Stay Alive; Brewers Lead World Series 3-1

Ben Williamson's pinch-hit grounder beat Milwaukee 4-3 after rookie Cooper Pratt's homer put the Brewers three outs from a title. Game 5 is tonight at 8.

The Tampa Bay Rays avoided a World Series sweep Tuesday night, Oct. 27, beating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings at Tropicana Field on a walk-off hit by pinch-hitter Ben Williamson, MLB.com reported. Milwaukee leads the series 3-1.

How it happened

The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chandler Simpson's double scored Jonny DeLuca from first, according to MLB.com.

In the top of the 12th, Brewers rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt homered to put Milwaukee ahead. In the bottom of the inning, against Shane Drohan, DeLuca singled in the tying run and Simpson singled to load the bases. Williamson then hit a ground ball to right that scored pinch-runner Nick Fortes with the winning run, MLB.com reported.

By the numbers

Tampa Bay is the fifth team to force a World Series Game 5 after trailing 3-0, joining the 2024 Yankees, 1970 Reds, 1937 Giants and 1910 Cubs; none of those four forced a Game 6, according to MLB.com. The win was the first walk-off by a team facing World Series elimination since David Freese's Game 6 home run for the 2011 Cardinals, also on Oct. 27.

Pratt had four hits, the first rookie to do that in a potential World Series clincher, according to MLB.com, citing the Elias Sports Bureau. His homer was the first extra-inning World Series home run by a rookie.

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio has at least two hits in each of the first four games; his 10 hits through four games tie Babe Ruth's 1928 mark, MLB.com reported. Reliever Aaron Ashby threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, running his scoreless streak this postseason to 18 innings, the most consecutive scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason, breaking Andrew Miller's 16 from 2016.

No World Series has been a sweep since 2012, a 14-series streak that is the longest in history, according to MLB.com.
