Robert “Rob” Vandall IV
Feb. 29, 1972 · Aug. 30, 2026
This one’s for my big brother, Rob.
Rob was born in Beckley, West Virginia, the Vandall family hometown, and grew up a Brookville kid, class of ’90. He went right into the Navy and spent six years as a fire controlman, then went to work for Continental Airlines in Columbus. He put in close to 30 years in the airline business, staying on when Continental was absorbed by United, and worked the ramp in Orlando once Florida got its hooks in him in 2015.
He was born on leap day, so he only got a real birthday every four years. Thirteen of them. We got fifty-four years of him, and that wasn’t near enough.
He loved to laugh, and he loved to curse (at work only… and sometimes, well…). Danzig, NASCAR, drums, seafoam green and black, and a concert ticket whenever he could swing one. His calendar read like a record collection: D.R.I., Life of Agony, Drivin N Cryin, the Black Crowes, Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, DEVO.
I stole my first Ice Cube tape from him, and that set me up for a lifetime of Ice Cube, Mack 10, Westside Connection, N.W.A and questioning authority. He’s the reason for 80% of anything cool about me, and he left me nothing but good memories.
Rob was the son of Robert “Bob” Vandall III and Janet Sue. He leaves his kids, Erica Costa (Waggoner), Oscar and Charlotte; his former wife, Missy Waggoner; his sister, Ruth Renee Swigart, her husband, Kevin Swigart Jr., and their daughter, Autumn; me; his aunts Joyce Halsey Erickson, Joan Engel, Elizabeth Vandall, Jerri Hartsock and Susan Vandall Clark; his nieces Madison Shaw and Chelsey Dietz; his nephew Carter White; his cousins Jason Erickson, Noah Aliff, Paula Clark White and Angela Engel; and a whole lot of people who’ll be retelling his stories for years.
